The Child and Family Mental Health Clinic at Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre provides a much neglected but desperately needed health service. Few primary health care facilities offer mental health services in the district and the nearest referral centres are regional hospitals such as Helen Joseph and Tembisa Hospitals which are all 30km or more from our target communities.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, combined with widespread poverty, places a heavy burden on individuals and as a result many of our patients become severely depressed and present with a wide range of mental health disorders.
The Child and Family Mental Health Clinic at Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre includes:
- A registered Psychologist, available for screening, evaluation, assessments, and on-going psychotherapy
- A Mental Health doctor, able to prescribe necessary medication for psychological impairment
- Outreach into the nearby Diepsloot community, providing psychological services and psycho-educational resources to Diepsloot Combined School
The Child and Family Mental Health Clinic works in conjunction with the other departments at Witkoppen to ensure comprehensive psycho-social care for our patients.
